The Western snowy plover declined in numbers because of habitat loss, disturbance of nest sites and encroachment of European beach grass. When it was listed in 1993 the U.S. population was estimated to be 1,500 adults. Protection efforts have since allowed the population to grow to more than 3,600 adults in 2010. Photo: Mike Baird.
