Marketing / Outreach Director

The Marketing/Outreach Director is responsible for building the audience for the activities and programs of the Bay Nature Institute and developing their revenue-generating potential, through marketing, outreach, partnership building, circulation management, publicity, and sales efforts across a range of traditional and new media channels. The Marketing /Outreach Director reports to the Publisher/Executive Director and also works closely with the Editorial Director and Development Officer to develop, coordinate, and implement strategies for projecting the profile of Bay Nature Institute and its message of exploration and stewardship of the natural world of the Bay Area.

This is a part-time position (30 hours a week), with strong possibility of increase to full-time. Starting salary is $31,500–$36,000 DOE ($42,000-48,000 FTE). Benefits include paid vacation, sick days, and health insurance. Offices are located in Berkeley, CA.

Job Responsibilities:

I. Marketing/Circulation – Print Publications

Develop, manage, and oversee efforts to increase revenues and audience for Bay Nature magazine and related print materials.

a. Bay Nature Magazine

Objective: Increase the number of paid subscribers, retail purchasers, and subscription partners.

  • Develop, manage and track subscription acquisition efforts;
  • Manage and optimize results from subscription renewal efforts;
  • Serve as primary contact for fulfillment house on issues of customer service, renewals, billing, etc.
  • Manage subscriber service & communications (with office manager);
  • Track and report on circulation data;
  • Develop and manage subscription partnerships with other organizations and institutions;
  • Work with content partners to maximize bulk sales of individual issues of magazines.
  • Publicize Bay Nature programs, issues, and supplements to news outlets and related organizations
  • b. Editorial supplements

    Objective: Increase revenue from sales of both upcoming and back issue editorial supplements.

  • Work with publisher or editor to maximize pre-press orders for upcoming supplement;
  • Pursue and maximize opportunities for post-publication sales of editorial supplements.
  • II. Marketing/Outreach – Online Programs

    a. BayNature.org Website

    Objective: Increase visibility of, and promote traffic to, Bay Nature website through publicity, partnerships, and search engine optimization.

  • Publicize website to media, related websites, and relevant organizations;
  • Develop partnerships with other sites for mutual linking and content sharing;
  • Work with website manager on strategy and methods for improving search engine ranking;
  • Work with web manager on website text and design to facilitate and optimize sales, including creating and implementing strategies to convert website users to subscribers.
  • Maintain daily public outreach through online networking tools, including working with Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr.
  • b. Bay Nature E-Newsletter

    Objective: Produce and distribute biweekly e-newsletter promoting ongoing contact with readers and partner organizations, and encouraging traffic to website.

  • Develop and select content for newsletter;
  • Work with partner organizations to highlight relevant work and content;
  • Manage production and subscriptions and track responses.
  •  

    III. Community Outreach & General

  • Recruit and manage marketing interns and volunteers.
  • Coordinate tabling at selected community events.
  • Represent Bay Nature at occasional conservation community events.
  • Maintain organization database.
  • Contribute to team process of shaping the magazine and website.
  • Provide feedback on Bay Nature materials and projects from marketing perspective.
  • Coordinate outreach for Bay Nature events and activities, including 10th anniversary in January 2011.
  • Qualifications

    We seek to hire a dynamic and capable individual with the following attributes and qualifications.

    Required:

  • Relevant marketing and/or outreach experience
  • Commitment to exploration and protection of the natural world
  • Highly motivated, creative, and outgoing, with a strong sense of initiative
  • Highly organized, with ability to track several projects simultaneously
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple responsibilities
  • Ability to work in nonprofit environment with limited resources
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail, Internet)
  • Desired:

  • Familiarity with Bay Area environment and conservation movement and issues
  • Analytical skills to evaluate marketing campaign options and results
  • Experience working for non-profit organization(s)
  • Experience with web marketing
  • Understanding of, and competence in, use of online social media
  • Ability to effectively represent Bay Nature to public, including other organizations and the media
  • Knowledge of database and layout software applications (FileMaker Pro, Adobe suite)
  • Experience working in Mac OS X environment
  • Knowledge of Google Analytics, Google AdWords, and Dreamweaver
  • Sense of humor!

    Volunteer Writing and Marketing Intern

    This BAY NATURE volunteer opportunity gives you hands-on writing, marketing, and communications experience relevant to both the non-profit and for-profit job markets. The marketing intern will assist the marketing director in various tasks and projects including

    • Interviews and article writing for Bay Nature's bi-weekly newsletter
    • Print and e-marketing campaigns
    • Maintenance and updates of Organizations Database
    • Events

    Desired Qualifications

    • Good communications skills
    • Solid computer skills
    • Ability to work independently

    Commitment

    This volunteer term will begin as soon as possible and be able to commit for a minimum three-month period.

    Office Hours, Work site

    Monday through Thursday from approximately 9:30 am - 4 pm.

    The volunteer is expected to work approximately six hours per week, preferably in one shift, but we can be flexible about multiple shorter shifts. Work is in-office for the first 4-6 weeks, while you learn about what we do. After that, telecommuting is just fine.

    Rewards

    As a volunteer, you will be able to give back to the community and learn about nonprofit publishing, marketing, and other nature-related organizations throughout the Bay Area.

    We're a small staff, so, depending on your interests, you can also get to help some with the print magazine and see how it comes together.

    Volunteer Web Editor

    This BAY NATURE volunteer opportunity will allow you to be a part of maintaining a great website. The Volunteer Web Editor will help gather nature-related event information and enter it into our Content Management System, so you'll learn about Bay Area nature while also seeing how complex websites come together. There will also be opportunities to report and write original, by-lined articles for the website.

    Responsibilities

    • Data entry for Article, Places, and Organization databases (10%)
    • Entering events on our online calendar (70%)
    • Writing and research (internet research, phone reporting, writing etc.) (20%, and optional; if you prefer only data entry, that's fine!)

    Desired Qualifications

    • Strong interest in nonprofits and the environment.
    • Solid computer and internet research skills.
    • Mature and self-motivated.
    • Able to work independently.
    • Commitment to experiencing and protecting the natural environment.

    Commitment

    This volunteer term will begin as soon as possible and we'd like a minimum three-month commitment.
