Birds of the Bay Trail Project

Calling all birders: Here’s your chance to nominate your favorite birding and wildlife area along a segment of the San Francisco Bay Trail. In order to encourage understanding about Bay Area bird species and to foster responsible land use along the Bay Trail through wildlife viewing and interpretation, San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) is sponsoring “Birds of the Bay Trail,” a project that highlights six to eight principal birding areas along the trail. This project mimics similar birding routes in Florida and Texas. SFBBO is a 20-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing knowledge of birds and their habitats through original research, monitoring, and educational activities and it wants to hear from you about your favorite birding area. To register your choice, go to the online nomination form at www.sfbbo.org or stop by SFBBO’s booth at this year’s celebration of International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) on May 10, at the Environmental Education Center (in Alviso) of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Six new maps showing over 230 miles of completed Bay Trail are now available from the Bay Trail Project. The maps include route descriptions and transit access information. They can be ordered at www.baytrail.org or (510) 464-7900; $4 for individual maps, $15 for the complete set.
