Butterflies seem to have a habit of roosting on scat. Pictured here is a satyr anglewing (Polygonia satyrus) at rest on some dried coyote scat. I've also seen red admirals and painted ladies doing this. Arthur Shapiro author of Field Guide to the Butterflies of the San Francisco Bay Area (U.C. Press 2007) tells me this behavior is "very common and normal! Also at cadavers, particularly, for some reason, dead snakes."
