By adopting a caterpillar of the Bay checkerspot butterfly, you can help prevent the local extinction of this federally threatened species from Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve. As part of a tightly controlled scientific program, caterpillars are being transferred from another Bay Area locality where there are lots of them, to Edgewood in an effort to re-establish the population that formerly thrived there.
Adults will be allowed to select a Bay checkerspot caterpillar and place it in its new home within the butterfly habitat at Edgewood. Minors accompanied by adults may select a caterpillar for the scientists to place on their behalf. This is a rare opportunity for you to play a role in preserving a species from extinction.
This event requires walking approximately 3 miles of moderately sloping terrain. You will be off-trail on uneven ground that may be wet or muddy. Bring water, a hat, sturdy shoes, and sunscreen. In order to prevent introducing non-native plant species to this sensitive area, your shoes should be clean of soil and seeds. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
The date of this event is based on predictions of when the caterpillars will be large and strong enough to be moved. The date is subject to change. If it changes you will be given as much advance notification as possible.
