SUMMARY:Exploring Drakes Estero by Kayak
DESCRIPTION:Join Bay Nature for a spectacular day on Drakes Estero with Blue Waters Kayaking and Point Reyes resident and naturalist David Wimpfheimer. As David wrote in our 2008 article about Drakes Estero\, this is one of the richest wetlands on the west coast\, and the best way to see it--by far--is by kayak. And September is one of the best months to explore it by kayak\, given the (generally!) warm\, mild weather and calm winds. Even the tides will be in our favor as we paddle out toward the mouth of the Estero (featured on the cover of the July-Sept 2012 issue of Bay Nature) in the morning\, take time for a picnic lunch and short exploration of the dunes at the tip of Drakes Beach\, and then paddle back to our launch spot next to Drakes Bay Oyster Company. Along the way\, we'll be looking out for harbor seals\, bat rays\, leopard sharks (they don't bite!)\, American white pelicans\, godwits\, grebes\, loons and a wide variety of other shorebirds\, waterbirds and raptors. Space is limited\, and must be reserved through Blue Waters by calling 415-669-2600. Cost is $120 per person (includes kayak\, paddle and all safety equipment). No prior kayak experience is required\, though you should be physically fit and able to paddle for several miles into the wind if necessary.
