SUMMARY:Fall Backyard Naturalist Program at Bouverie Preserve Highlights Sonoma’s Native Oaks
DESCRIPTION:Led by Bouverie Preserve biologist Jeanne Wirka\, the Backyard Naturalist Program will provide an overview of Sonoma County oaks and oak woodlands\, including detailed hands-on training in oak identification using leaves\, acorns\, and other clues. Participants will also explore the amazing world of oak galls—those strange and beautiful growths on oaks that are induced by certain insects and other galling organisms. The class begins with a brief introduction and overview at Bouverie Preserve’s Education Center. The remainder of the class will be held on the trail. Participants will receive a durable oak identification trail card that can be used throughout Sonoma County as well as other curriculum materials. Participants are encouraged to wear long pants\, closed-toe hiking shoes and dress in layers as temperatures can vary throughout the day.  Bring a lunch to be eaten on the trail and plenty of drinking water. Class size is limited. Register by October 12.
