Take a docent-led quick paced hike through the oaks and grassland with some hill climbs. We will take a few short breaks to discuss the flora, fauna, history, and geology of this beautiful open space. Rockville Trails Preserve is only accessible by docent-led hikes at this time.
WHAT TO BE PREPARED FOR: (1) Arrive on time and be prepared to immediately carpool or caravan from the meeting place (see below) to the trailhead. (2) Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be prepared for the following: An intermediate to strenuous pace hiking 4 miles up and down rugged, steep, and slippery hills that are full of sticky seeds, thorny plants, and thistle. (3) Rockville Trails is a working ranch—cattle are free range so they roam as they please. (4) All trails are unimproved—expect rough, rocky, uneven ground. (5) Visitors must be accompanied by a docent at all times. (6) Since the preserve is otherwise closed, the entry and exit gate will be locked except for the start and end times of the hike. (7) There is no drinking water. (8) There are no bathrooms. (9) In order to protect our natural habitats and your pet’s safety, dogs are not allowed. (10) Take only pictures, leave only footprints, and maintain a safe distance from wildlife (e.g., rattlesnakes).
WHAT TO BRING: (1) A backpack with plenty of water and snacks/lunch. (2) Boots or sturdy closed-toe shoes with good tread. (3) Long, sturdy pants and layered clothes. (4) Protection from the elements (sun, wind, fog, rain, cold). (5) Also recommended: Hiking sticks, bug repellent, binoculars, camera.
MEETING PLACE: Meet your guides promptly and be ready to leave immediately from the big red “Ice House” building on Suisun Valley Ct, near the intersection of Rockville Rd. and Suisun Valley Rd., Fairfield, CA. Carpool or caravan from there to the trailhead.
