One Family’s Cross-Country Ride of Passage by Bike

Five years ago, Matt Biers-Ariel and his family set out on a cross country cycling trip to celebrate son Yonah’s 13th birthday–a physical ride of passage for a computer game-loving son who refused to have a bar mitzvah. Join Matt for a fun digital presentation of his family’s adventures, cycling 3,804 miles from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., across the Sierra, the Rockies, the Ozarks, and Appalachians.

Matt will read from his new memoir, “The Bar Mitzvah and the Beast”, and show you how an ordinary family can have an extraordinary adventure. Learn how the Biers-Ariel clan planned for their self-supported journey and made the ride a fun and meaningful rite of passage, in spite of 41 days of temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, 17 days without stove fuel, and an unpredictable tandem bicycle aptly named ‘The Beast’. If you register for this free presentation at www.rei.com/berkeley, we will hold a seat for you until the scheduled start time.
