Friends of the Petaluma River and the Southern Sonoma Resource Conservation District in collaboration with Coastwalk will host the Annual Creek Clean Up here in Petaluma!

For more information or to register for the event please follow this link and/or read below:

The Southern Sonoma County RCDand partners are hosting inland trash cleanup events as part of COASTWEEKS, a three-week celebration of our coastal resources that begins on the third Saturday of September each year. The kick off for the celebration is Coastal Cleanup Day, when 80,000 Californians come together across the state to keep our coasts and inland waterways free of debris. The goal of the event is to pick up any and all trash and debris before it has a chance to be mobilized by winter run-off into our storm drains, creeks, rivers, bay, and ocean. Join thousands of volunteers throughout California to keep our coasts and inland waterways clean! Read on for event details in the Petaluma and Sonoma valleys.

Sponsors: Southern Sonoma County Resource Conservation District, Friends of the Petaluma River, Sonoma County Water Agency Zone 2A Flood Control Advisory Committee.

What to bring:

  • Check the weather and dress appropriately, but we recommend long pants and sleeves, sturdy boots, and dressing in layers that can be removed.
  • Please bring gloves if you have them, and a refillable water bottle as we will have water available.
  • 5 gallon buckets are great for collecting trash and reduce the use of plastic garbage bages – please bring one to use.
  • We will have some gloves and buckets on hand to loan out, and a porta-potty and hand washing station will be available.

To participate in the event, you will need to sign a liability waiver and anyone under 18 will need their waiver signed by a legal guardian. If you wish to print and fill out at home, you can download a copy of the waiver online, available in English and Spanish. We will have copies at the sign-in table as well.

REGISTER FOR THE EVENT ONLINE so we know how many people to expect.

This year, the goal is to increase the number and reach of groups collecting trash. We need to pick up any and all trash and debris before it has a chance to be mobilized by winter run-off into our storm drains, creeks, river, bay, and ocean.

The RCD and Friends staff will scout public access sites along creeks and the River ahead of the event. Volunteers can come to the meet-up location to sign up, grab needed materials, and head out to various locations in teams. However, in an effort to spread out, cover more ground, and be even more effective, the Petaluma coordination team will be providing materials and support for neighborhood breakout groups that would like to organize their own teams to clean local neighborhood streets, parks, creeks, etc.

Remember – any trash that makes it to a street or parking lot storm drain will end up in a creek and eventually the Petaluma River and further downstream.  These breakout events can happen on any day of your choosing within the three week COASTWEEKS window.  Ask your neighbors, friends, classmates, or church congregation to lend an hour or two and together we can make a huge impact.  The RCD will collect the same data for any breakout events and compile areas covered and total weight of trash and recycling removed.

If you are interested in getting involved in this upcoming event or organizing your own, please REGISTER and/or contact us (info below).

You can always email us at events “at” sscrcd.org with any ideas or questions. If you plan on organizing a breakout site, please email Jason at events “at” sscrcd.org.
