SUMMARY:Walk into History: Celebrating the Saving of Bahia
DESCRIPTION:This special 40th anniversary event is a salute to everyone who helped save this 200-acre ridge on the edge of the San Pablo Bay wetlands\, and the continued effort to preserve the ridge and restore the wetlands adjacent to it. Several short walks to restoration sites and habitat viewing will be part of the event. Marin County Parks Naturalist David Herlocker will lead a short walk and discuss this unique habitat that includes a forest composed primarily of trees that are Oregon/Valley/ Blue Oak hybrids. Marin Audubon Society President Barbara Salzman will also be on hand to describe the acquisition process\, and lead a short walk through an area that is currently being restored by volunteers from the Marin Audubon Society. Supervisor Judy Arnold will be there to discuss the value of all the Open Space preserves and parks that surround Novato\, and to join us as we commend those who have worked so hard to secure and preserve them. Now a part of the Rush Creek Open Space Preserve\, Bahia would be completely developed if not for the efforts of a number of agencies and individuals that worked tirelessly to rally community support and to ultimately raise the nearly 16 million dollars necessary to purchase the property. The Marin Audubon Society spearheaded this effort; this special 40th anniversary event is a salute to their success and their continued effort to restore the adjacent wetlands. We request that no animals (except service animals) attend. Questions: Contact David Herlocker at (415) 893-9508 or DHerlocker@marincounty.org. Meet at the end of Bahia Dr in Novato. From Hwy 101 take the Atherton Ave/San Marin Dr exit east on Atherton Ave and turn left at Bugeia. At the “Y”\, Bugeia turns into Bahia\, follow to the end.
