DESCRIPTION:WILDFLOWERS OF THE HIGH EASTERN SIERRA NEVADAA special trip to benefit the Regional Parks Botanic Gardenoffered by the Friends of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden    August is the month for the high country\, where soaring peaks reach for the heavens and meadows are decorated with a plethora of strikingly beautiful wildflowers. The east side of the Sierra in the Bishop area is among the most readily accessible\, presenting a variety of plant communities and hiking options. The adjacent White Mountains also provide awesome stands of ancient\, sculpted bristlecone pines\, the oldest known living trees.    Our 5-day adventure will be based out of the town of Bishop in the Owens Valley\, and each day we’ll visit a different destination for hiking\, photographing\, identifying\, and scrutinizing a wide variety of wildflowers and trees. Hikes will range from 4 to 8 miles long at high altitudes\, so be prepared for some strenuous conditions.    Highlights will include the rugged Rock Creek area with subalpine lakes and abundant meadows; the Schulman Grove in the White Mountains\, where the oldest bristlecone pines grow; Long Lake and environs for alpine habitats\, subalpine forests\, and meadows;  and a possible visit to Onion Valley to see the foxtail pine\, close cousin to the bristlecone pine.    DATES: Monday afternoon\, August 6\, through Friday\, August 10\, 2012    INSTRUCTORS: Glenn Keator\, botanist/author\, and Joe Dahl\, Regional Parks Botanic Garden supervisor    COST: $450. Includes instruction\, lunches during the trip\, and a $200 tax-deductible donation to the Regional Parks Botanic Garden. Participants are responsible for their own breakfasts\, dinners\, and accommodations in the Bishop area plus all transportation.    ACCOMMODATIONS: Participants should reserve and pay for their own accommodations in the Bishop area for the nights of August 6\, 7\, 8\, and 9. There are campgrounds on Hwy 168 west of Bishop as well as a number of motels in Bishop proper. For information about camping/lodgings in the area\, visit the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce and  Visitor Bureau website at www.BishopVisitor.com.
