SUMMARY:WILDFLOWERS OF THE HIGH EASTERN SIERRA NEVADA
DESCRIPTION:WILDFLOWERS OF THE HIGH EASTERN SIERRA NEVADAA special trip to benefit the Regional Parks Botanic Gardenoffered by the Friends of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden August is the month for the high country\, where soaring peaks reach for the heavens and meadows are decorated with a plethora of strikingly beautiful wildflowers. The east side of the Sierra in the Bishop area is among the most readily accessible\, presenting a variety of plant communities and hiking options. The adjacent White Mountains also provide awesome stands of ancient\, sculpted bristlecone pines\, the oldest known living trees. Our 5-day adventure will be based out of the town of Bishop in the Owens Valley\, and each day we’ll visit a different destination for hiking\, photographing\, identifying\, and scrutinizing a wide variety of wildflowers and trees. Hikes will range from 4 to 8 miles long at high altitudes\, so be prepared for some strenuous conditions. Highlights will include the rugged Rock Creek area with subalpine lakes and abundant meadows; the Schulman Grove in the White Mountains\, where the oldest bristlecone pines grow; Long Lake and environs for alpine habitats\, subalpine forests\, and meadows; and a possible visit to Onion Valley to see the foxtail pine\, close cousin to the bristlecone pine.
