SUMMARY:Wind, Energy and Wildlife: The Challenges of Wind-Energy Development and Wildlife Conservation
DESCRIPTION:In this free talk\, U.S. Geological Survey research statistician Manuela Huso discusses tools to accurately estimate wildlife fatalities at wind farms and help identify options for monitoring and mitigation. A free public lecture by U.S. Geological Survey research statistician Manuela Huso Wind-power development in the United States is increasing exponentially\, with plans to provide 20 percent of the country’s total power by 2020. High numbers of bird and bat carcasses at some wind farms have raised concerns about the environmental effects of this rapidly expanding industry. Why don’t simple counts of carcasses beneath turbines provide reliable estimates of fatality? What tools are scientists developing to accurately estimate wildlife fatalities and help identify options for monitoring and mitigation? Manuela’s USGS lecture will also be webstreamed live. Go to http://online.wr.usgs.gov/calendar/ for details.
