Exploring Utah’s Canyon Country and Beyond
Tuesday, March 09, 2010
7:00 PM
to
8:30 PM
High mesas, slot canyons, natural stone arches, hoodoos… the red rock country of the Four Corners region of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico is a stunning landscape of fascinating geologic features. Tonight, author and photographer Steve Hinch will share slides and information on his favorite day hikes in southern Utah and beyond. Steve will take you on a tour of canyon country wilderness lands, including Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, and Mesa Verde National Parks; Chaco Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and Natural Bridges National Monuments; and the Cedar Mesa region. As he shows you best places to find Anasazi ruins and rock art (pictographs and petroglyphs), he’ll introduce you to this rich culture, which reached its peak 700-800 years ago. Don’t miss Steve’s tips on how to prepare to hike safely in canyon country, so that you can get off the beaten track and explore lesser-known areas. Please note: Registration is optional for REI’s; free in-store presentations. If you register at www.rei.com/berkeley, you will receive an email reminder and any program updates. Seating is limited and is first-come, first-served.
