Fungal Fun
Sunday, December 13, 2009
9:00 AM
to
4:00 PM
Join the fun, finding and focusing on fungi with docents Chris MacIntosh and Katherine Greene. You'll see a wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes grow underfoot (and sometimes overhead) on this non-technical, 7-mile fungus appreciation hike. Hiking along trails in different habitats, you'll train your eyes to notice the sometimes camouflaged and always fascinating fungi that flourish in winter. The rain (or lack of) will determine what is seen. Bring boots for mud, stamina (there are some very steep sections of trail accompanied by frequent stops on this hike), and your curiosity.
Meet at the main preserve parking lot (Whittemore Gulch entrance) located on Skyline Boulevard next to the now closed Kings Mountain Country Store. The parking lot is 4.5 miles south of Highway 92, or 8.1 miles north of Highway 84.
