Researching and Conserving Pumas from California to Patagonia
Thursday, September 18, 2008
7:00 PM
to
8:30 PM
Presentation on puma research and conservation by Zara McDonald, founder of Felidae Conservation Fund.
In a presentation at the Oakland Zoo, cat conservationist Zara McDonald will delve into puma research and conservation. She'll present the stories, visuals, and science of the Bay Area and the Patagonia mountain lion projects.
Just piloted this spring, the Bay Area Puma Project is a pioneering study of pumas in the Santa Cruz Mountains that will generate unprecedented insights into the behavior of one of our region's top predators. The Bay Area Puma Project will utilize novel GPS technology to answer questions that have so far evaded scientists.
The Patagonia Puma Project applies an ecosystem approach that considers the complex predator-prey interactions in forested habitats of Chilean Patagonia, where the endangered Huemul (a type of deer) is a flagship species. The currently declining population of Huemul is being blamed on the puma and this study hopes to exonerate this powerful predator.
