Shade seekers find relief from the heated days on this hike through the Thornewood preserve.
Crave some shade during the hot summer days, then take a hike through the cool Thornewood preserve. You’ll hike to Schilling Lake through chaparral and broadleaf woodlands at a leisurely pace with docents Paul Vadopalas and Tommi Smith, then continue on an unimproved trail following the contour of a hill until you encounter an empty creek bed and turn-around point. Redwood trees provide shade for this portion of the approximately 4-mile round trip hike. After retracing your steps to Schilling Lake, you’ll follow a fire road up the hill for lunch and a view.
Bring a lunch.
Where to meet:
Access to the Thornewood Preserve parking lot is off La Honda Road (Highway 84) about 1.6 miles uphill from the Portola Road intersection. Look for the District sign just inside of the stone gate pillars at the preserve entrance, on the left side of La Honda Rd. if you are driving uphill. Meet in the small parking area on the right about 500 feet from the entrance gate. Please do not drive beyond this lot toward the private residences.
