Garden for the Environment

Garden for the Environment maintains a nationally acclaimed one-acre urban demonstration garden and offers environmental education programs about organic gardening, urban compost systems and sustainable food systems. Since its founding in 1990, the garden has operated as a demonstration site for small-scale urban ecological food production, organic gardening and low water-use landscaping. Thanks so much for your interest in volunteering with GFE! We’d love to have you come by and get your hands dirty with us! Every Wednesday and Saturday of the year we host volunteer hours unless it’s a holiday or otherwise indicated on our website. It’s good practice to check our website before showing up because sometimes we are away at conferences or other garden-related events. Our volunteer hours are on Wednesdays from 10am – 2pm and Saturdays 10am – 4pm. You can show up for as long or as little as you wish! Just send us an email a few days before to let us know what day(s) you plan to show up and we’ll send you a volunteer form just to ensure you have a fun and safe day in the garden! Be sure to bring clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, closed-toe shoes, layers as it can swing from chilly to warm in a matter of moments, a hat, water bottle (we have potable tap water onsite) and sunscreen. Otherwise, we have all the tools you’ll need as well as gloves! We like to enjoy lunch together so if you plan to be around during lunch hours (12:30ish – 1pm) feel free to bring a bag lunch. Often times someone is heading to a favorite lunch spot around 9th & Irving so no problem if you forget your lunch. We look forward to meeting you and sharing the garden with you!
