Lake Merritt Institute
The Lake Merritt Institute works under contract with the City of Oakland to maintain and restore Lake Merritt, the nation’s oldest wildlife refuge. The institute and its volunteers remove 1,000 to 6,000 pounds of trash from the lake each month and conduct education about urban runoff, the biggest source of water pollution in the lake.
