Bios for our Runners up

Marc Crumper, Livermore

Marc has lived in the Bay Area for 35 years. He worked at a manufacturing plant for 30 years until it shut down. Now, he is trying to make it as a photographer, and visits the East Bay Regional Parks four or five times each week to go jogging and look for photo opportunities.

"Having lived in several areas of the U.S., I can say we are very lucky to reside in an area where we have access to a park system like the EBRPD."

Karl Gohl, Los Altos

A Bay Area resident since birth, Karl is using his retirement to hike and photograph more nature spots nearby him and all around the East Bay.

"For me, nature and photography are intertwined cause and effect. My enjoyment of the challenge of making beautiful or interesting photographs makes me appreciate nature more. My enjoyment of nature makes me want to capture it in pictures."

Becky Jaffe, Oakland

Becky is a high school math and science teacher, who enjoys sneaking up on our small neighbors (like the baby katydid in her photo) and taking pictures.

"The natural world piques my curiosity and deepens my sense of wonder and awe at being able to bear witness to the magnificent complexity surrounding us."

John Krzesinski, Pleasanton

Born in England, John has lived in the Bay Area for four years. He frequently hikes, bikes, and photographs in the East Bay Regional Parks.

"Wildlife photography is my favorite kind of photography, and I'm much more aware of the wildlife around me as I hike than I used to be."

Rick Lewis, Alta Loma

A birder and backpacker, Rick has called the Bay Area home, second home, and vacation destination for more than 30 years, and has lived in Berkeley, Oakland, and Alameda.

"If you spend time outdoors you will eventually conclude that the script is ever changing and likely to surprise the heck out of you."

Deane Little, Boulder, CO

Although currently a resident of Colorado, Dean lived in the Bay Area for many years. His nature photography can be found on display in hospitals and clinics, where he hopes the images provide patients and their families "a sense of peace and promise."

"I view photography as an opportunity to communicate my love of nature with others."

Other Great Photos

Along with the eight winners, these images were our top picks from the 350+ submissions we received. It wasn't easy to choose just eight as our winners to appear in the print issue of Bay Nature! We're delighted and honored to feature these additional images
