Deer Island Open Space Preserve
This small preserve east of Novato is popular with dog walkers and joggers, and delights visitors with wildflowers displays in the spring.
165 acres
Open Access
Marin County
Managed By: Marin County Open Space District
Deer Island serves as a daily slice of nature for many Marin residents. It's level 2-mile loop trail is easily accessed and frequently used by exercisers and dog walkers, though it is still possible to find a slice of solitude on this diverse 135-acre preserve. Spring brings a show of wildflowers that attract a variety of butterfly species. Hikers can also enjoy the surrounding marshland, oak grassland, California Bay woodlands, varied birds and raptors and plenty of deer.
