The Coastal Commission regulates development along the Coastal Zone, which covers the Pacific Coast and San Francisco Bay. The commission also funds education programs and the annual Coastal Cleanup Day in September, perhaps the world's largest single-day volunteer event.

Coastal Cleanup, This Saturday!

This Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, more than 80,000 people will hit the California coast for a not-so-typical day at the beach. Coastal Cleanup Day is right around the corner and the state's largest volunteering event will likely net some 1.2 million pounds of trash. A staggering number indeed, which raises the question -- How does all this debris end up on the shore?

This Weekend: Get Dirty, Clean Up

After a summer spent watching our nation scramble to clean up one of history's largest oil spills, it seems like an especially good time to get our own hands dirty working to protect our nation's fragile natural resources. Call it fate or coincidence then that both Coastal Cleanup Day and National Public Lands Day take place this Saturday, September 25th.
