California’s largest volunteer event has a environmental focus. Coastal Cleanup Day took place on Saturday and preliminary results show that 57,442 volunteers picked up 320 tons of trash off California waterways. The prize for the most unusual item found this year goes to a love letter found at Kehoe Beach in Marin.

Volunteers carried a new data card this year to track incoming refuse from the 2011 Japanese tsunami, which is expected to arrive on West Coast shores.

In the Bay Area, volunteers were hard at work, as Bay Nature’s Paul Epstein reports.
