Volunteers Build New Trail Near Martinez

One Weekend, One Mile, All in 180 Days' Work

Bay Nature reporter Daniel McGlynn took part in a June 2009 work weekend with Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-CAL), a nonprofit that recruits dozens or even hundreds of people to work in one park or open space over a single weekend. Workers at this event built a mile of brand new trail at Fernandez Ranch near Martinez. Volunteers did the equivalent of 180 days of work in one weekend. The new trail, on land owned by the Muir Heritage Land Trust, is an important link the Bay Area Ridge Trail, a regional trail that traverses Bay Area uplands in a grand loop of hundreds of miles.
