Gov. Jerry Brown is joining business groups — including the Silicon Valley Leadership Group — to gut provisions of California’s landmark environmental law. But the governor’s fellow Democrats in Sacramento are opposing the end-of-session rewriting of CEQA. “This is the biggest blow to environmental laws in many years and it’s being pushed through at the last minute,” said Assemblyman Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael. “And I just think we need to make sure that the whole world is watching.” [Sacramento Bee]
Walnut Creek has a new weapon against goose poop — floating islands. Instead of pouring in chemicals to disperse the nitrogen-rich excrement in a city pond, the city has installed islands made from recycled plastic water bottles that are loaded on top with mulch and plants. The islands are designed to act like wetlands, absorbing the pond’s pollutants. [Contra Costa Times]
Occupy the Farm protesters are back at it on the Gill Tract in Albany, tending the crops they planted before UC Berkeley police locked them out earlier this spring. The protesters have the backing of Keep Albany Local, a group that’s gathered more than 1,400 signatures calling for a referendum on the city council’s July 9 decision to develop the land. [Daily Cal]
