Advertising Director (contract/commissioned position)

Bay Nature Institute, a Berkeley-based nonprofit and publisher of Bay Nature magazine and baynature.org, is looking for a part-time contractor to serve as Bay Nature’s Advertising Director, selling advertising in the quarterly print magazine, weekly enewsletter, and on the website. As a contractor, you will have your own independent business, other client(s), and work from home using your own equipment. This position reports to the Executive Director.

Bay Nature is a 22-year-old nonprofit with a locally based staff of ten. We connect people to the natural world of the Bay Area through a:

  • Beloved quarterly print magazine, Bay Nature, and website, baynature.org
  • Weekly e-newsletter and social media channels: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Annual event celebrating local conservation heroes
  • Series of educational webinars and local hikes

The position

This job is ideal for someone who: 

  •  Enjoys selling advertising on a value basis
  • Likes to engage with people in email and over the phone
  • Cares about nature, conservation, and environmental issues 
  • Is comfortable using a CRM (Salesforce) and email service provider (MailChimp) 
  • Is methodical, detail-focused, and good with deadlines
  • Operates ethically and truthfully
  • Appreciates and respects independent journalism
Compensation

It is a 100% commission-based position with 20% commission. Commission is paid when the issue with the advertisement is published and the advertiser has paid Bay Nature. Invoicing is done by the Office Manager. 

Process expectations

Ad Director will be expected to keep the Salesforce CRM current with booked advertisements and is responsible for obtaining ad materials with correct specifications.

Opportunity

In 2021, total advertising revenue was $121K. Spring issue 2022 revenue was $21K. 

Opportunities include building advertising revenue back to its pre-pandemic highs of $35-45K per issue as well as increasing advertising in Bay Nature’s popular enewsletter .
