This locally published collaboration between photographer Todd Pickering, biologist Gregory Andrews, and the blossoming poets of Lagunitas Middle School is a vivid demonstration of the many ways we can know a landscape—in this case, Lagunitas Creek, site of some of the most successful salmon restoration work in the region. Andrews gives the reader a concise and readable overview of the several varieties of salmon that populate the Lagunitas Creek watershed, as well as explanations of the conditions that make the creek an ideal spawning ground.
However, the gorgeous detail of Pickering’s photography provides a much more eloquent testimony to the beauty of Lagunitas Creek, as do the poems of the eighth-grade class at Lagunitas Middle School. Led by poet and teacher Albert Flynn DeSilver, the students affirm with their poems that a love of nature has been passed on to the next generation. Lagunitas Creek: Hope in Restoration shows the reader that, as Pickering says, ‚ÄúChange can happen; restoration is possible.‚Äù
