SUMMARY:BirdBlitz! (CA Biodiversity Week 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that both California and Sonoma Valley are biodiversity hotspots? As many as a quarter of California’s species exist in this compact area\, a place that comprises only a tenth of 1% of California’s entire land area! Join us during this California Biodiversity Week in a bioblitz focused on the birds of Sugarloaf along parts of the Hillside\, Creekside\, and Lower Bald trails. \nMeet at the White Barn. This free event requires registration\, as it is limited to 12 participants. We will be using apps such as Merlin and iNaturalist to document spotted species. If you haven’t used iNaturalist\, or haven’t made an observation for a while\, this is your chance – just make sure to load the iNaturalist app on your phone before you head out to the park and that your device is fully charged. Participants of any level of experience or mobility can help find\, photograph\, and/or identify life in the park. Join or view our iNaturalist project here! \nThis event is part of California Biodiversity Week along with others hosted from September 6-14. Throughout this week\, individuals\, communities\, and organizations will host in-person and virtual events to inspire discovery of our state’s remarkable nature\, while encouraging everyday actions to protect and steward it. View the power of community science in action!

SUMMARY:California Biodiversity Day BioBlitz
DESCRIPTION:California Biodiversity Day is all about appreciating the many species that call California home. We’ll be leading a BioBlitz to celebrate! BioBlitzing involves exploring an area in search of plants\, birds\, insects\, mammals\, fungi\, reptiles and any other organisms around. We’ll be snapping photos and posting them to iNaturalist so we have records of our amazing biodiversity\, essential to understanding how things are changing or staying the same on the Refuge. \nWe will lead a leisurely walk in the Butterfly Garden and on the New Chicago Marsh boardwalk at the Alviso Unit of the Don Edwards SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge to look for plants\, insects\, birds\, and much more. This program is suitable for all ages\, and the trails are accessible. Those of all experience levels with iNaturalist are welcome to participate. You’re also welcome to participate on your own at other parts of the Refuge! \nDownloading the iNaturalist app and creating an account is a great way to prepare for this event. To get an idea of what we might find\, you can check out our observations from our last BioBlitz in March of this year: \nEEC BioBlitz for Beginners\, March 2025 · iNaturalist \nWe also recommend joining our iNaturalist Project for this event in advance by searching for “Don Edwards SF Bay NWR California Biodiversity Day 2025.” We will help you with the rest! \nOther Considerations: \nPlease plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to check in.\nWhat to bring: Wear comfortable clothing\, sun protection\, and comfortable walking shoes. Reusable water bottles are a huge plus and are a great step to reducing plastic pollution. If you have binoculars\, magnifying glasses\, a camera\, or other tools to help oberve wildlife\, feel free to bring them!\nADA-compliant parking spaces\, trails\, and portable toilets are available on-site.\nIf you need any more accommodations\, please don’t hesitate to reach out to watershedwatchers@sfbayws.org.\nThis program is brought to you by the San Francisco Bay Wildlife Society\, the nonprofit Friends group to the US Fish & Wildlife Service\, with support from the Santa Clara Valley Urban Runoff Pollution Prevention Program (SCVURPPP).
