SUMMARY:BirdBlitz! (CA Biodiversity Week 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that both California and Sonoma Valley are biodiversity hotspots? As many as a quarter of California’s species exist in this compact area\, a place that comprises only a tenth of 1% of California’s entire land area! Join us during this California Biodiversity Week in a bioblitz focused on the birds of Sugarloaf along parts of the Hillside\, Creekside\, and Lower Bald trails. \nMeet at the White Barn. This free event requires registration\, as it is limited to 12 participants. We will be using apps such as Merlin and iNaturalist to document spotted species. If you haven’t used iNaturalist\, or haven’t made an observation for a while\, this is your chance – just make sure to load the iNaturalist app on your phone before you head out to the park and that your device is fully charged. Participants of any level of experience or mobility can help find\, photograph\, and/or identify life in the park. Join or view our iNaturalist project here! \nThis event is part of California Biodiversity Week along with others hosted from September 6-14. Throughout this week\, individuals\, communities\, and organizations will host in-person and virtual events to inspire discovery of our state’s remarkable nature\, while encouraging everyday actions to protect and steward it. View the power of community science in action!

SUMMARY:Sugarloaf Fire: Recovery\, Renewal\, & Late Summer Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:After the October 2017 Nuns Fire and the October 2020 Glass Fire burned 70-85% of Sugarloaf\, it took months of hard work to repair trails and facilities. Now\, almost 5 years after the Glass Fire\, signs of the fire are masked by a vibrant recovery and renewal. Join Naturalist John Lynch on this 3.5-mile\, 3.5-hour hike along the Lower Bald Mountain hillside to the Observatory and back along the shady creekside to explore these remarkable changes and talk a little about how the original peoples of this area used fire. We will also search for late summer wildflowers\, butterflies and dragonflies. \nMeet at the main parking lot. Tickets are $10 for general audiences\, $5 for students\, youth (12-17 year olds; must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian)\, Sugarlof members\, volunteers\, and free for children Bring at least a quart of water\, layered clothing\, hiking shoes/boots\, snack\, sun protection\, and as an option\, hiking poles and/or a camera.
