SUMMARY:Winged Wonders
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, a fantastical flock of giant bamboo birds lands at the Garden to enchant both the young and young at heart! Marvel at the majestic 20-foot wingspan of an Acorn Woodpecker in flight amongst the Garden’s oak trees; take photos with a friendly 10-foot-tall Western Bluebird; and delight in encounters with larger-than-life owls\, quail\, and more in every corner of the Garden. \nThe colossal sculptures up to 20 feet tall are made entirely from natural materials by Boston-based artist duo Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein to highlight the beauty and diversity of California’s native birds and the ecosystems that support them. The bamboo sculptures all reflect the species that make their home in the grasslands\, forests\, and vineyards of the Garden.

DESCRIPTION:On the 149th birthday of the park’s namesake\, Jan. 12\, 2025\, Jack London State Historic Park announced the theme of the 10th Annual Young Writers Contest: “Surviving the Wild.” \n“For our 10th Annual Young Writers Contest\, we celebrate Jack London’s compendium of stories about high adventure in the wilderness\, like ‘Call of the Wild\,’ White Fang\,’ ‘To Build A Fire\,’ and many others\,” said Matt Leffert\, executive director of Jack London State Historic Park. \nSixth to eighth grade students entering this year’s contest are instructed to write a short story involving a group of friends on a camping trip who get stranded in the wilderness and discover a mysterious set of footprints surrounding their campsite. \nComplete contest rules\, and the entry form is available at https://jacklondonpark.com/annual-young-writers-contest/. SUMMARY:Ulistac Natural Area- Tour and Restoration with Cultural Significance!
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: a brief history and tour of the Ulistac Natural Area\, a short “helping hands” invasive grass weeding session\, BYO lunch together at Lick Mill Park\, followed by the opportunity to select cuttings for propagation. \nUlistac Natural Area contains the last 40 acres of dedicated open space in the City of Santa Clara along the Guadalupe River. For over 1\,000 years before Spain began colonizing California in the 18th century\, the Ohlone people founded and inhabited a village called Ulistac\, or “basket place.” Since 2001\, when the land was declared a natural area (from a golf course)\, students and volunteers restored most of the site\, beginning with a butterfly garden! \nSponsored by Bringing Back the Natives Garden Tour: https://bringingbackthenatives.net/ \nRegistration is required: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeXMphy1Vw3XhJPs-Wye7hrYKSueUodysEvDwceIPm30cd7Ag/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=101898551220092268592 \nEmail questions to carlaadventures@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Nature & Forest Bathing: an immersive experience for well being
DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing originated in Japan in the 1980’s as an antidote to chronic stress and disease. Countless studies prove that guided walks in the forest reduce anxiety\, improve focus\, increase gratitude\, boost immune function\, and lower blood pressure and cortisol levels. It’s a chance to slow down\, unplug\, and fill your senses with wonder. \nWhat to expect: \nA 2-hour experience built upon a series of invitations and sharing circles. Participants are led in an activity to fully feel the presence of the place in which we find ourselves\, then we wander slowly for 15-20 minutes\, focusing on a prompt. Examples might be notice what’s in motion; explore texture; or focus on the music of this place. After each prompt\, we gather to share what we’ve noticed. Our final sharing circle includes tea and snacks. \nYour guide will be Joanne Greene\, certified with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy whose motto is: The forest serves as the therapist; the guide opens the door. She is the author of “By Accident: A Memoir of Letting Go” and host of the podcast\, In This Story\, Joanne is a former San Francisco radio talk show host and news anchor\, who currently helps people focus on what’s meaningful in guided walks and presentations.
