Astronomy Lecture: Charon, Pluto’s Companion

August 27, 2019 @ 7:15 pm - 9:00 pm

| Free

Please join the Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society on August 27 for our general meeting featuring Dr. Ross Beyer, Planetary Scientist with NASA Ames Research Center and the SETI Institute. Dr. Beyer will discuss what the New Horizons space probe revealed about the surface of Pluto’s moon Charon. The probe showed evidence of a sub-surface ocean early on and Charon’s surface suggests how icy worlds can form far from the gravitational influences of giant planets.
The meeting starts at 7:15 p.m. with a short “What’s Up” presented by MDAS member Dick Flasck, who will take a brief look at simple moon capture models using the conservation of energy, and the implications regarding the evolution of dark matter clumping. Our monthly meetings are held at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience, Community Room, 1931 First Avenue, Walnut Creek, CA 94597.
