We will also explore creating a concepting phase development team + pursuing DOE funding. \nOur speaker Kevin Cameron will describe ocean energy capture/conversion based on Salter’s Duck technology\, AKA the Edinburgh duck\, which was invented by climate change leader (and recently deceased) Stephen Salter in response to the oil shortage of the 1970s. \nSalter’s Duck was one of the earliest generator designs proposed to the Wave Energy programme in the United Kingdom. Despite proven high efficiency in test environments\, funding was halted in the 1980s after oil prices rebounded and the UK government shifted away from alternative energy sources. \nRoundtable Topics: \n* Investment by state of California to study wind and wave power tech\n* Overview of Salter’s Duck\n* Adapting Duck tech for CA coast and SF Bay tidal environments\n* Additional methods for wave and tidal conversion\n* Creating a Concept Phase development team\n* Grant monies to fund the effort–such as HeroX Power at Sea and others \nMore info and registration: https://sfbluetech.com/events/march-happy-hour/ URL:https://baynature.org/event/ocean-and-tidal-energy-for-california-and-beyond-salters-duck/ LOCATION:south beach cafe\, 800 Embarcadero\, San Francisco\, 94107 ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://baynature.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/NOAA-Desktop.jpg ORGANIZER;CN="SF Blue Tech":MAILTO:events@sfbluetech.com END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20240315T160000 DTEND;TZID=America/Los_Angeles:20240315T183000 DTSTAMP:20240328T173041 CREATED:20240312T031030Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240312T031030Z UID:10004356-1710518400-1710527400@baynature.org SUMMARY:“Hello-to-Spring” Birding Walk w/ “I’m Birding Right Now” (Teresa & Miles TufflIi) DESCRIPTION:Join Teresa & Miles Tuffli (I’m Birding Right Now) for a guided birding walk on March 15\, 2024 (Friday) @ 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM along West County Regional Trail in Forestville\, California. \nNo binoculars? No problem! We can provide quality binoculars courtesy of Vortex Optics if you’d like to borrow a pair. Beginners are encouraged — we want to help you get out and appreciate the bird world. Don’t be shy if you’ve never birded before — that’s what we’re here for! (All experience levels are welcome though.) \nLet’s get outdoors and say hello to the approach of Springtime! Spring brings an increase in noticeable bird activity as many birds begin to sing and pair up for their breeding cycle… let’s explore who we might find! \nWe’ll slowly meander up to 2-3 miles along the flat and paved trail as evening approaches. We’ll look at\, listen to\, and identify a variety of songbirds\, woodpeckers\, raptors\, and anything else that pops up. As we walk and stop frequently to enjoy the birds we encounter\, we’ll discuss a variety of topics\, such as: techniques for locating birds\, what sorts of details to notice when observing a bird\, species identification\, bird vocalizations\, and bird behavior and habitats. \nWe guarantee you’ll leave with an increased appreciation of the bird life that surrounds us! \nCost: $25/person. (10% of your payment goes back to Sonoma County Regional Parks.) However\, we don’t want anyone to miss out on the joy of birding due to disposable income concerns\, so please contact us directly (imbirdingrightnow@gmail.com) if the cost is an issue for you. \nTickets can be purchased through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/860567459437 \nAccessibility Information: This trail is fully accessible\, almost completely paved\, and generally flat. You will be guided by POST ambassadors who will share details about the area’s interesting natural history\, from the coastal scrub habitat to the Fitzgerald Marine Preserve which hosts tide pools and breeding grounds for harbor seals. \nThe walk is moderate at about 2.5 miles round trip with about 300 feet of gradual elevation gain. \nIn 2004\, POST stepped in to fund the protection of the Bluff\, restore it to ecological health\, and construct a 1.6-mile section of the California Coastal Trail that now runs across it. Today all 161 acres of the Bluff are fully protected in perpetuity – a process that took four transactions\, 11 years of work\, and an array of visionaries\, landowners\, and donors\, both public and private. \nTo sign up\, please complete the Eventbrite registration here. Please register using a valid e-mail so you receive your e-ticket & the pre-hike instructions. \nPlease note that dogs are not allowed at this Community Walk and that all minors must be accompanied by a parent and guardian for the entirety of the walk. \nThis event is part of POST’s community event series. These events are open to the general public and POST donors alike\, and we hope you will join us! We also curate a separate series of private events for our donor community. This cleanup project will contribute to continued restoration efforts in San Geronimo Creek and the Lagunitas Creek Watershed\, to maintain and create habitat for salmonids of all life stages. Learn more and register here. \nSan Geronimo Creek is a tributary of Lagunitas Creek\, one of the southernmost strongholds for endangered Coho Salmon\, threatened Steelhead Trout\, and Chinook Salmon. It provides an essential habitat for these salmonids. On the bank of San Geronimo Creek\, adjacent to the Marin Water San Geronimo Water Treatment Plant\, exists an old coho hatchery site. The hatchery was in operation from the early 1980s to the 1990s\, and it allowed the incubation and hatching of coho eggs in the San Geronimo Valley. The hatchery has not been used since 1993. \nThis event is suitable for ages 14 and up. Participants should be comfortable working with shovels and crowbars and walking on uneven surfaces. Learn more and register here. \nDuring this free event\, we’ll discuss the wildlife\, plant life\, and ecosystems of the Santa Cruz Mountains and agricultural systems alike as we go on a stroll through the UCSC Farm. We’ll spend time bird watching\, investigating signs for critters\, and looking at agroecological practices that enhance biodiversity on the farm\, such as barn owl boxes – which we will look at and discuss together. \nThis event is led by Chad Moura (wildlife biologist and Natural Reserve System staff)\, Ximena Moura (Center for Agroecology)\, and James Nakahara (Friends of the Farm & Garden). \nThe event will begin at the Hay Barn before we head up to the farm. Things to bring: Layered clothing\, and sturdy closed-toed shoes. Binoculars are encouraged but not required. In the case of rain\, this event will shift to an indoor presentation with a Q&A session and an owl box demonstration. We will be walking on uneven terrain and up mild slopes during our nature walk. \nPresented by the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden. Learn about becoming a member and sign up here.
