Discover Nature Webinar – Tracking our Feathered Friends: Bird Diversity Trends at Pepperwood

Thursday, December 10, 2020
10:00 – 11:30am
ONLINE using Zoom platform
Free, donations welcome
Ages 13 and up (youth under 13 welcome with adult supervision)

Join staff members Michelle Halbur and Nicole Barden as you learn about the importance of birds as indicators of ecosystem health and how watching and listening to birds tells us the story of our landscape. You’ll hear the results of 14 years of bird monitoring data collected at Pepperwood by community scientists. Discover some of the birds who call Pepperwood home, hear what they sound like, and learn how they are doing after two recent wildfires – the 2017 Tubbs and 2019 Kincade Fires – that burned the entirety of the preserve.

You’ll find out how you can become a backyard community scientist by utilizing online data tracking resources that are fun and user friendly. This engaging presentation will give you a renewed appreciation for our local birds and a better understanding of some of the scientific work underway at Pepperwood.

Michelle has an M.S. from Purdue University and oversees Pepperwood’s Community Science and Visiting Scholars programming as well as managing a multitude of on-site research projects including long-term grassland and forest monitoring, plant phenology, breeding bird surveys, the Stephen J. Barnhart Herbarium, and more. Michelle also helps to translate Pepperwood’s science for a variety of audiences, including students, interns, and the public.

Nicole earned her BS in Biology with an Environmental Education minor at Northland College, and is currently an Environmental Educator at Pepperwood. She is an avid birder, and has experience working with animals, including 3 years volunteering at the California Raptor Center. Nicole helps develop and teach Pepperwood’s education curriculum, and serves as the project coordinator for Pepperwood’s breeding bird survey.

This lecture will consist of a live multimedia presentation followed by facilitated Q&A.

*This lecture will be held online using the Zoom Webinar platform. Once you register, you will be emailed the link and instructions on how to join the Zoom Webinar at the scheduled time. You can join this event using a computer, smartphone, or tablet – in your web browser or by downloading the Zoom application.

We are offering this event free of charge, but graciously accept donations which support our continued ability to offer our education programs to the community. Thank you!
