BLACK DIAMOND REGIONAL PARK – Head underground to explore this historic silica sand mine, on the recently extended tour route, with a small-group tour that lasts 60 to 75 minutes. You must have a group of 10-15 participants to reserve a 10am tour. All participants must be age 7 or older, and parent participation is required. Hard hats and flashlights are provided. Please bring a jacket; you will be underground in the mine, where temperatures are in the 50’s year-round, for most of the tour. The new tour route begins and ends at Greathouse Visitor Center. The new route involves a 15-minute above ground uphill guided-walk, including climbing a long flight of stairs and walking up a steep slope, to reach the Hazel-Atlas Portal. The underground portion of the tour involves walking through the mine on a level path, with railroad tracks and ties in the center of the path, before descending a very long flight of stairs near the end of the tour. Please notify staff, in advance, if you are unable to climb a long flight of stairs and a steep slope and/or if you are unable to descent a long flight of stairs; A mobility shuttle may be available to assist with the above ground part of the tour and an early-turnaround option may be available for those who cannot descent a very long flight of stairs. Tours are not wheelchair accessible. Group Tour Schedule: Weekends at 10am only, March through November. Groups of 10 or more may reserve the 10am tour. Individuals and smaller groups may reserve space on the 11am and 2pm tours.

Registration for the noon and 3pm tours, which are first-come, first-served, takes place at Greathouse Visitor Center on day of tour only.
Additional first-come, first-served tours may be added on days when demand is high, as staffing allows.
