Interview with Valentin Lopez, Tribal Chair of the Amah Mutsun

June 3, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 12:30 pm

| Free

Join Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) for a Facebook Live talk with Valentin Lopez, Tribal Chair of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band. Valentin will discuss the tribe’s history, current projects, and the film “Umunhum,” recently included in POST’s production of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival. The film describes the literal and symbolic restoration of Mount Umunhum, the site of the tribe’s creation story located in the South Bay.

The Amah Mutsun trace their ancestry and heritage through a time when the Spanish occupied their traditional lands and involuntarily held local native people in missions San Juan Bautista and Santa Cruz. Before that time their peoples were of many distinct bands, villages, and communities. The Amah Mutsun work to conserve, steward and restore cultural and natural resources within their territory, as well as research and teach traditional ecological knowledge within their community.
