When it comes to nature in Oakland, some of the first things that come to mind are pigeons, geese, and weeds, weeds, weeds. How did these things get here, and why are they so darned successful? Though these hardy plants and animals can cause quite a bit of frustration, they have fascinating life histories and survival skills that are well worth learning about. We’ll focus on the “unloved” nature at Lake Merritt, and spend some time appreciating the flexibility and innovation of these species!
Bring drinking water and sun protection. This will be about a 1 mile loop on paved paths with no elevation change, and we’ll be walking slowly. $5 parking fee at Lake Merritt.
Help CCNH continue to provide free natural history events! We suggest a $20 donation per event, no one turned away for lack of funds. You can make a donation here.
Please RSVP so we know how many people to expect.
