Migration + Memory: An Immersive Audio Walk through Downtown Oakland

Saturday, April 10 - Wednesday, June 30

Walk through Downtown Oakland to trace the many migrations that have transformed the city into an ever-evolving community.

Migration allows people to adapt and survive. It also transforms a city into a community. Walk through downtown Oakland to uncover these interconnected migration stories.

Inspired by the sounds of local birds and their movements through California, our audio walk explores human migration and the influence various communities have had on Oakland’s identity. Walking from Old Oakland to Lake Merritt, we’ll trace the indigenous history of the Ohlone people, peer into local businesses, look to art for messages about social justice, reflect on the resilience of the Chinese Diaspora, and envision a city where unity transcends division.

Migration + Memory was written and produced by documentarian and Oaklander, Sarah Holtz. This tour has advanced features. You’ll need the app to begin exploring: Download the app.
