Interested in assisting the public in safeguarding this local harbor seal habitat, the largest on the Sonoma Coast, during their pupping season? Stewards’ Seal Watch Coordinator Heather Rowe will host a Seal Watch training. Seal Watch volunteers rove Goat Rock Beach at the rookery, located at the mouth of the Russian River via Goat Rock Beach. Volunteers assist in protecting the harbor seals during the busy weekends in the spring/summer months through interpretation. Park visitors are informed about the harbor seals’ identification, natural history, their international protection under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and overall conservation with the help of a Seal Watcher. Beachgoers from near and far are able to view the animals from a safe distance with help of ropes, signs, and binoculars maintained by Seal Watch volunteers.
UPDATE: Training will occur on two dates, 2/11/23 and 2/25/23. Please attend both trainings. The online training on 2/11/23 will be recorded and posted on Stewards YouTube for later viewing if you’re unable to attend.
The second training on 2/25/23 will be in-person beginning at Goat Rock Beach. Please contact us with any questions.
