Not too many years ago, this natural landscape nearly succumbed to an ill-conceived development named Marincello. But long before that, the valley was known as Elk Valley, and the beach at the end of the trail was called Indian Cove. Then came that fateful day in 1853. There lies the tale of the wreck of the SS Tennessee and her fool-hardy captain along with a half-crazed doctor, a chest of gold, and a missing “keyhole” in the cliff.
This is a moderate hike of 4 miles on a mostly level trail.
