SUMMARY:Book Talk: Inga Aksamit's Between Worlds
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, August 21 at 6:30 pm\, when local author Inga Aksamit will present her latest book\, Between Worlds: An Expat’s Quest for Belonging. Inga is an award-winning author\, globe-trotting adventurer and veteran oncology nurse who writes about travel and human connection. She spent her formative childhood years as an expat as her family moved around the world for her father’s work. Living in South Asia and South America in the 1960s brought the family through harrowing world events; in fact\, by the time she was thirteen\, Inga faced her second war zone! Come and hear about the benefits and challenges of being a third-culture kid\, anecdotes from war zones\, and how Inga eventually ended up in Kenwood\, volunteering at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. \nFree event; RSVP required\, as there will be a reception before the event. Bring layers\, and if you’d like\, a snack. Parking fees apply.

SUMMARY:BirdBlitz! (CA Biodiversity Week 2025)
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that both California and Sonoma Valley are biodiversity hotspots? As many as a quarter of California’s species exist in this compact area\, a place that comprises only a tenth of 1% of California’s entire land area! Join us during this California Biodiversity Week in a bioblitz focused on the birds of Sugarloaf along parts of the Hillside\, Creekside\, and Lower Bald trails. \nMeet at the White Barn. This free event requires registration\, as it is limited to 12 participants. We will be using apps such as Merlin and iNaturalist to document spotted species. If you haven’t used iNaturalist\, or haven’t made an observation for a while\, this is your chance – just make sure to load the iNaturalist app on your phone before you head out to the park and that your device is fully charged. Participants of any level of experience or mobility can help find\, photograph\, and/or identify life in the park. Join or view our iNaturalist project here! \nThis event is part of California Biodiversity Week along with others hosted from September 6-14. Throughout this week\, individuals\, communities\, and organizations will host in-person and virtual events to inspire discovery of our state’s remarkable nature\, while encouraging everyday actions to protect and steward it. View the power of community science in action!

SUMMARY:Park Rx—Forest Bathing Walks 2025
DESCRIPTION:The practice of Forest Therapy has been shown to improve health and well-being. \nHave you heard about “Shinrin-yoku” or “forest bathing”? Here is an opportunity to take a walk and experience the practice for yourself. Learn techniques to maximize the health benefits and stress reducing qualities of this walking practice. Shinrin-yoku originated in Japan and is gaining popularity in the United States for its documented health benefits. This practice takes a walk in the woods to another level. A centering and calming restorative practice\, it promotes balance and restored vitality through a quality of presence and heightened sensory awareness. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park hosts a Forest Therapy Series as part of its Park Rx Program the 4th Sunday of the month (March through November) led by certified Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) practitioners. \nWe invite you to join us on this therapeutic experience of sights\, sounds\, scents\, touch\, and memory. The outing begins at the White Barn and meanders less than one mile from the start point in a reverie of introspection and connection to the natural world.
