San Francisco’s Liam O’Brien shares his wealth of knowledge all about Bay Area butterflies. Produced by Rick Bacigalupi.
I just saw the short clip on KQED about endangered checkerspot butterflies & habitat issues. I live in Carmel Valley where I used to see many checkerspots on my property, but seldom do now. I fear I have made the problem with planting changes, even though I have added many local native plants through the years. In the process I eliminated poison hemlock, poison oak and berry brambles. Could any of these be plants that checkerspots need? I don’t use insecticides, but did use Round-up years ago to eliminate the P.H., P.O. and brambles. I no longer use it. Thanks for any info you can give me. PS, I’ve also been planting aristolochia in hopes of someday getting the pipevine swallowtail to come back. Myrleen Fisher
