Lone wolf OR7 appears in California
by Bay Nature on March 08, 2012
The lone, male wolf that’s been making its mark on California history as the first to show in 88 years has been back and forth between Oregon and the Golden State. This is the only known video footage of 2 1/2-year-old OR7, so named because he’s the seventh radio-collared wolf in Oregon.
Until recently, OR7 was a member of northeastern Oregon’s Imnaha pack, which had as many as 16 members in 2010 but are now down to about five. Dispersal is common among younger wolves, who seek out new packs or try to establish new territory. Although they are known to take down domestic animals, they are all protected by the federal Endangered Species Act.
