Bay Nature Institute joins this year’s celebration of “The Year of the Bay” with the publication of a special 16-page insert in the July–September 2013 issue of Bay Nature magazine. Written by award-winning environmental journalist Ariel Rubissow Okamoto, “Baylands Reborn: Restoration and Renewal on San Francisco Bay” will trace the development of the art and science of wetland restoration around the Bay and look at the enormous benefits for wildlife and society that the largest wetland restoration initiatives on the west coast have produced. Then we’ll turn our attention to the two serious threats facing our Bay wetlands—sea level rise and termination of state and federal funding—and look at how scientists, managers, and advocates are gearing up for this uncertain and challenging future.
The publication will include:
- Case studies of major projects in both the north and south Bay
- Interviews with key experts
- Original maps showing wetlands and restoration projects in the north and south Bay.
- A listing of selected public access points to wetlands around the Bay.
This issue also features the winners of our “Fun on the Bay” photo contest, and showcases the otherworldly realm of Bay plankton with microscope photos from acclaimed National Geographic photographer David Liittschwager that make these tiny Bay denizens look like a cross between aliens and fine jewelry. Beyond the Bay, we’re profiling the oft-heard but not-often-seen wrentit, following fog researchers into the redwoods, and visiting Butano State Park, Big Basin’s lesser-known sibling.
