Overview
You won't feel like your only 9 miles from downtown Oakland in this natural oasis. The AC Transit 339 or 39 coming from Fruitvale BART stops right at the Sunset Trailhead/Fernwood Picnic site. So it's easily accessible from just about anywhere you can get on the BART system. This mellow 3.5 mile hike/trailrun is a special treat as it snakes through some beautiful redwood groves and lush creeksides. The Palos Colorados trail in particular is a favorite getaway for many hikers and runners. There are bathrooms and water along the way.
From the Palos Colorados Trailhead you can continue on to a small trail on the west side of the road that leads you to the quaint little village of Montclair. Grab a snack at any of the many local restaurants and cafes and then pick up the AC Transit 19 bus to 12th St Oakland BART station. Or you can double your distance and run back to the start and pick up with AC Transit 339 or 39 back to Fruitvale BART.

I tried to take this hike today and was completely frustrated by the lack of trail names or trailhead info in the description. We had a lovely hike, up sunset loop, across Bayview and then down Fern, but it would have been much more pleasant (and perhaps we would have taken the right hike) if you had included the trail names here.
