Tracking began in May 2023
Last update July 2025
As of now, the awards we’ve been tracking for Wild Billions now amount to nearly $1.4 billion—$1,380,702,777.
That’s money federal agencies are spending on nature in the greater San Francisco Bay Area—from the Farallones to the Sierras—thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act.
Below is the map of projects we found.
In 2025, we add caveats. As the Trump administration and Congress attempt to claw back BIL and IRA funding—even some contractually obligated funding—which in turn has prompted lawsuits and other fights, we can’t be sure how much of this money will be spent as intended. IRA funding is more at risk than BIL awards since it came later and so was often not as far along in the spending pipeline.
Funding announcements slowed in 2024, and basically halted in 2025. Many of these funding programs run through 2026, so it is possible more may come—but it’s likely to be a trickle.
Story: Whither Went the Wild Billions? Before the clawbacks, this ‘freaking game-changer’ for nature made it rain.

About this project: Bay Nature is reporting on a potentially transformational amount of funding for nature in BIL and IRA. Tell us what you think or send us a tip at wildbillions@baynature.org, and read more at our Wild Billions project page.
