It’s So Hot Everywhere Else — Why Not in the Bay Area?
Most of the state has set record temperatures this summer, but San Francisco has been cool and almost permanently cloudy because of its cool marine layer.
Marisol García-Reyes is an ocean and atmosphere scientist at Farallon Institute, where she studies how the marine ecosystem is impacted by changes in climate. She has lived in the north Bay Area and studied coastal upwelling for over 10 years, where she has learned to appreciate the foggy early mornings at the beach as much as the possibility of whale watching when the coast is clear.
