Maya Akkaraju recently graduated with a BS from U.C. Berkeley, where she studied molecular environmental biology and worked as a reporter and deputy editor for The Daily Californian. Currently, she’s an aquatics and hydrology intern with the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and she brought her hydro know-how to her reporting on the wetland restoration of Patterson Ranch in the East Bay.

More than 100 different species of birds—from American bitterns to marsh wrens—have visited the native salt grass and sprawling, stubby pickleweed in the newly constructed seasonal wetland.
