Bay Nature’s Local Hero Awards recognize individuals in our community whose efforts foster understanding and preservation of the natural world of the San Francisco Bay Area. The 2018 awards will be presented at Bay Nature’s Local Hero Awards Dinner in San Francisco on Sunday, March 25, 2018. Sandra Corzantes is our 2018 Local Hero for Youth Engagement.

Sandra Corzantes is passionate about the outdoors and connecting young people to it. A Burlingame resident, Sandra volunteers with not one but five different South Bay environmental organizations, leading hikes and teaching kids and teens about the natural wonders nearby.

An outdoor education docent with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, Sandra introduces South Bay elementary school kids to local open spaces and teaches them about the natural world and their role in preserving it. She also volunteers as an outings leader for Latino Outdoors, making excursions in natural areas culturally relevant for people with limited experience in the outdoors. As a youth organizer with the Sierra Club’s Loma Prieta Chapter, she is helping to resurrect the chapter’s 20s-30s outings group. And as a Peninsula Open Space Trust volunteer ambassador, Sandra works to increase awareness of POST’s work in the community. Last but not least, she contributes to citizen science by collecting raptor migration data for the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory. Sandra recently became a certified California Naturalist, and is getting trained to be an even more effective protector of nature through the Sierra Club’s Environmental Stewardship Program.
