Sean FitzHoward, winner of our 2012 Local Environmental Hero Award for Youth Engagement, recently wrote us about her experience aboard an oceanic research vessel over the summer. It was time well-spent!

Dear David and Bay Nature Staff,

I just wanted to share some pictures of my summer with you. For five  weeks this summer, I was an Honors Research Program student with the Ocean Exploration Trust (founded by Dr. Robert Ballard, the man who found the Titanic!) I spent three weeks at the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. I learned about oceanography and computer programming with the four other HRP students. Then I spent two weeks aboard their exploration vessel, the E/V Nautilus, in the Mediterranean Sea. I also got to spend some wonderful time in Istanbul and other parts of Turkey!

The program was pretty competitive, and I think my award really helped me in the application process, so thank you Bay Nature! :)

I had an absolutely amazing time, and learned so much, and wanted to share it with you!

Sincerely,

Sean
