598 acre Park managed by: San Jose
The first municipal park in the state, Alum Rock Park is nestled in the foothills of the Diablo Range and provides miles of hiking trails not far from busy downtown San Jose.
The park’s peaceful acres offer trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding; picnic areas and barbeques; children’s play lots and sand volleyball courts; a visitor center with educational displays; and the Youth Science Institute, a science education center for young students. The park’s canyon setting provides grassy south-facing slopes, forested northern exposures, riparian habitat along the creek in the valley bottom, and expansive views from the ridges. Its trails are a favorite with local runners, and the steep canyon slopes display the diversity of California’s.native vegetation.
